Cady Finlayson: News

Band clips from APAP - January 19, 2012

Clips from our band showcase at the Arts Presenters Conference. There's Marina's beautiful voice, Lauren dancing those Irish reels, Cady moving like crazy as she's going for a beat on the stompbox, and Tim over there on the left with the bodhran. The one and only Vita...

Our new pencil drawing! - January 12, 2012

VIta and I are gearing up for PARADE SEASON. More on this, tba.
In the meantime, my favorite videographer (Brian Lynch) did a pencil drawing of one of the tunes we played for the Arts Presenters Conference (APAP), which was held at the HIlton Hotel. The piece we are playing is O'dowd's which is an Irish reel, but of course Vita adds his own take on it. Tim Alworth is playing the bodhran.

Child of Giants Screening - November 20, 2011

Today I went to see a screening of the film, Child of Giants, which is a documentary about growing up with two famous parents (Dorothea Lange and Maynard Dixon). One of the tracks from my Harp and Shamrock CD is used in the film, during the photos Dorothea took of Ireland, so that was fun to see. The film is going to be shown in Ireland, so look out for that....
Just seeing all those photos of the dustbowl and the depression - and then the ones in Ireland, was a good reminder of how fortunate we are, and all this right before Thanksgiving.

The other news is that we have a December show in New York City that includes two workshops.
Tips and Tricks of Irish fiddle (how to give your tunes that Irish lilt)
&
Global Guitar Styles: Spice up your guitar playing with Global Guitar Styles
It's December 11th as part of the 6th Street Sundays Series.
2 pm workshops, 3 pm show and $15 includes workshop, show and one drink. All ages welcome.

NYPD Memorial Concert - September 11, 2011

One of my favorite concerts that I do is the NYPD Memorial Concert. As many of you know I play with the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County, and they often participate in the concert. It's hard to explain the incredible audiences and spirit that is in that concert, but this review tells the story well, with videos. My favorite part of the event is the mass bands marching up Times Square....

Summer news 2011 - July 18, 2011

July 2011
This summer has been going very quickly and I've enjoyed all the concerts , both the ones I was playing and the ones I've been going to. I checked out the last part of the Frankie Gavin/De Dannan concert in my neighborhood, and that was amazing.
I'm also heading out to Virginia the end of this month to hear Dolly Parton, live in concert at Wolftrap. I can't wait!

Our June show at Caramoor was a summer highlight (a family show, captured in the video!).

Next in the news category, we'll be heading to the West Coast for a booking conference (Western Arts Alliance) the end of August and hoping to come away with some West Coast shows (I do miss the West Coast).

In September, it's time for the Town Hall NYPD Memorial show, (I'm playing with the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County). I love playing with the pipes and New York's Town Hall is a beautiful place to play. I hope the elevator is working this year. One year it wasn't and I was walking up 7 flights of stairs to our warm-up room wearing 3-inch heels. Yikes!

June news - June 14, 2011

If you missed this month's blog, we have a concert coming up at Caramoor (Caramoor.org) ,that is worth checking out. The place is gorgeous with all the gardens and what is especially fun about this show is that there are all sorts of activities for kids all having to do with the concert (art/trying instruments/looking at Irish dance dresses). The MC/organizer (Katie Kresek) will be introducing us and the instruments to the kids, and they will have a chance to ask questions.
This reminded me of when I went to play for a pre-school class around St. Patrick's Day. I brought some postcards of Ireland, that showed the green and one that had sheep in it. WHen it came to questions, one of the little ones raised her hand and asked. ..."How many sheep ARE there in Ireland?". They didn't cover that one in my media training!

We hope to have some major news for you soon. This is the calm before the storm!

Going through video footage of shows, and in the midst of all, A TORNADO in Brooklyn - September 20, 2010

Our first real tornado in Brooklyn - big trees down, a few streets like Vita's with roofs blown off the buildings....
I'm reminded of the power of nature and that life is precious and short, so a good time to live fully and experience it all.

Vita and I have been going through DVDs of live shows, putting something together for presenters that shows what we do. It was amazing to see the variety of where we've played - from beautiful venues, to outdoor festivals, to workshops, to moments in our travels where we just HAD to do a video (i.e. the Grand Canyon and The White House).
Tying it all together in a few minutes is another challenge, but it does make you think about what you'd like people to know about your music, your live show, and the audiences that are very much a part of all this.

We'll probably post it on my youtube channel when done (www.youtube.com/cadyfinlayson).

Back from the West Coast - August 9, 2010

Just back from the West Coast - the beautiful foggy Oregon beach in all its glory and a Seattle sunset over the mountains on the way to the airport. It made me want to miss my plane!

This is a busy month actually - Vita and I did an interview on the Backstage Gourmet show with PJ Grimes. It's a really cool show that features vegetarian recipes and global music. She also has a cookbook with recipes from musicians and others. I posted a photo of my Quinoa recipe on our photos page, and the link to the archived show so you can listen is http://healthylife.net/RadioShow/archiveBSG.htm
I also did another interview today for a website (not yet launched) about New York City musicians, geared towards the underground scene. So I'll keep you posted on that.

Last but not least, Electric Green is now available for purchase at CDbaby in a limited edition (this is the only place to get a physical copy of the cd, except for shows www.cdbaby.com/cd/finlaysontanga (Digital copies at itunes amazon.com mp3s rhapsody and more...)

August is always a time of figuring out plans for the year (September always feels like the start to me) and I'm hoping to come up with some exciting projects for the fall...I'll keep you posted.
Enjoy the rest of summer- It sure is going quickly! -Cady

Cady starts the "Music Success in Nine Weeks" blog challenge - July 9, 2010

Just a quick note to announce that today I started the "Music Success in Nine Weeks" blog challenge! It's on my blog at http://celticfiddle.blogspot.com but I'm posting it here.

Friday, July 09, 2010
Music Success in Nine Weeks: Irish fiddler starts the Ariel Publicity blog contest

Today I'm starting the "Music Success in Nine Weeks" Blog Challenge. The book is written by Ariel Hyatt, who is a Cyber PR expert (Arielpublicity.com) and the challenge is to complete each chapter in the book and blog about it (the winner receives a publicity campaign from her company).I decided to take the challenge because I knew having deadlines and making a public statement would get me to actually do everything in the book, which is really the point (if any of you like to sit on the couch eating chips and watching programs on healthy eating, you know what I mean).
So here goes...

Chapter one is all about Getting Mentally Prepared. Setting goals!
I've read just about all the literature out there on goal setting, so I'm familiar with the stats (writing them down means your 10x more likely to achieve them/give dates and write them as if they're already happening etc. ).

So today I started on my list of 6 focus areas (the book offers several suggestions) and I went to Staples to get a notebook and colored pens so I can write them in pretty colors and post them all over. That was the fun part, especially because Staples has finally added a deep purple (my favorite color) to their color palette. Somehow writing in purple gives me confidence that my goals are reachable!

I did get a little overwhelmed on the lifetime goals - thinking about what you'd like to do in your whole life really brings up some complicated questions (why are we here, what is my purpose in life? how long am I going to live?), but luckily there are also short-term goals to balance those. When I started making my lifetime list (play music in Africa, hear Dolly Parton in concert, to name a few), I realized that it does help you see if your daily actions are going anywhere near that direction.

As far as the short-term goals, one of the things as an artist that we all need to do is "build a fanbase" (How many times have we heard that!), and my other more personal goal is to balance the music business work with the being-an artist/creating-part so I'll just start by announcing two of my goals...To be done by August 6th)

1. It is August 6th 2010 and I have 1,000 contacts on my reverbnation page (those come from everywhere - facebook, twitter, myspace etc. )
and 100 subscribers to my Fanreach newsletter which goes out once a month. Here's my newsletter signup if you'd like to be a part of it!

2. It is August 6th 2010 and I have written 2 more tunes to be licensed and scheduled a recording session to record them.
There it is, DID IT! I now have two of my goals officially in the universe for everyone to see.

The last thing I wanted to say about Chapter One of the book is that you're supposed to write down 5 positive things you do every day and keep them in a notebook. Two of them need to be career related, but you can include other things like exercising, etc. Not sure if getting up in the morning counts...

The day has only just started, but my first success is that I started the contest and am feeling hopeful and inspired to navigate that complicated creature called the music business.

Cleveland Police Memorial/Our first review and Going to VA - May 27, 2010

Just back from Cleveland where I went with the pipe band (Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County). It's a memorial weekend to commemorate the fallen officers and it's quite an event. Parade, Memorial Service, Pipe Tattoo, seeing old friends and best of all, playing the violn with all those pipers.
It's really hard to put into words what an event this is, so
I decided to do a video about my trip - it's being edited and bleeped in sections! ...more on this later....

Also Vita and I got our first review for Electric Green.

If you know anyone near Fairfax, VA, send them to our show!

Irish Coffee on "Spotlight: Music from Ireland" - May 15, 2010

The Spotlight: Music from Ireland includes a tune from the Irish Coffee CD
http://oliverdiplace.blogspot.com/
and...the pipe band finished their cd (10 years since the last one!).
They will be selling it in Cleveland at our show there, and hopefully will have it available online soon. www.policepipesanddrumsofbergencounty.com I played on about 5 tunes, and the most popular one that I did seems to be The Gael. The audience always likes that one.

More on the Cleveland trip later!

How to make an Irish Coffee and more - May 6, 2010

I was interviewed on "oneminutehowtos" on "How to make an Irish Coffee"
I made several coffees to get it exactly right, so if you'd like make one your self and have it come out perfectly, check out this one minute interview

http://oneminutehowto.com/Shows/Shows.asp?464
The other big news is that the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County just came out with a new cd. Momma elephants wait an awfully long time to give birth, and this cd felt like that, since it has been ten years since the last one. After listening to it for the first time last night, I can say that it's well worth the wait. I did several tracks on it and of course there are a lot of pipes! It's not online yet, but I'll keep you posted. They'll be selling them at live shows for sure.

I'm playing with the Pipe Band in Cleveland this month and have decided to do a video diary of the trip...so you can be along for the ride.

FOlk Music Conferences: Far-West and Nerfa - November 20, 2009

Vita and I just got back from two folk music conferences: Far-West in Irvine, CA and Nerfa in Kerhonkson, NY. I'm not a runner, but I imagine that running the New York City Marathon feels about like doing two conferences in one week.
We hosted the Price of My Pig showcase, which was a lot of fun (pig decorations and everything) and the best part was that musicians Jeni & BIlly (www.jeniandbilly.com) wrote a song called Price of my Pig...that was a highlight for me.
Then on to the Nerfa conference in Kerhonkson....
This one was huge with a lot of people, a LOT of songwriters and a lot of food...
While there Vita and I were videotaped by the lovely hosts of whereforearts.com
and we are playing holiday music...so stay tuned for this...

Music from Irish Coffee CD used in Welsh video - November 9, 2009

The track Dunmore Lassies was featured in a video about Llynnon Mill, which is in the beautiful country of Wales (where I lived for 6 months as a child).

French guitarist Taking Greyhound on his Cross-Country gig? - September 29, 2009

It's almost October already, the time is going like crazy!
Next month Vita and I will be attending the Far-West Conference in Irvine, CA. This is a chance to meet people involved in folk music on the West Coast - booking agents, musicians, house concert hosts, radio DJs, etc.
The big news is that Vita might take THE BUS from New York to California. No, he's not scared of flying, it's not a budget issue, he just wants to TRY THE BUS CROSS-COUNTRY. I don't know if he knows how big the U.S. is. I mean, we bought those buttons in Texas that said, "Texas is bigger than France", but that's just one state!
So I'll keep you posted on that one!
Enjoy the fall_

August already! - August 1, 2009

I can hardly believe it's August already, the summer has been going full-speed. Vita and I did our first West Coast tour in July, doing shows in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue and Portland.
We did a lot of new material, even sang a few songs, and it was great to play every night, I love that.
The week we came back we had a full-band show in MA, at the Blackstone Valley Celtic Festival, and that was a lot of fun. We met Irish comedian George Casey, who kept us all in stitches between acts. The place where they held the festival, Indian Ranch, has a lot of country concerts, so it was fun to see all the photos of country greats backstage. Plus they had these little tables with cowboy boots as the stands.
And then back to NYC, where I spent a week at the Mark O'Connor fiddle camp, doing a teacher training for his new method book.
It was inspiring to hear so many great string players all under one roof!
So it's been a great summer so far, but it's going too fast!!

West Coast tour - June 13, 2009

Vita and I are getting ready to bring our new sounds to the West Coast.
We have two shows in Portland (July 15th noon at the Airplay Cafe and then that same night 6 pm. at Mississippi Pizza Pub). Then we'll be in Bellevue at Crossoads, (July 17th).
THEN
workshops at Dusty Strings Acoustic Music Store in Seattle (July 19th). www.dustystrings.com
and on Monday July 20th we'll do a local Seattle show right by where I grew up, at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center...7p.m.
(free)

Check out the music page for samples of our new sounds!
and for those East Coast people, we do have a full band show in NYC before we leave -Thursday July 9th 6:30 pm at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden mvhm.org
(it is in Manhattan, not Mount Vernon)

AND July 25th up in Webster, MA playing for the
Blackstone Valley Celtic Festival

and July 30th for an outdoor show in Windmuller Park (Woodside, Queens)

Working with student musicians and West Coast Duo Tour - April 12, 2009

This month, Vita, Tim and I are playing for/with students at the United Nations International School. They're having a barn dance, and the kids will play a few fiddle tunes with us, plus we'll do a lot of our own. Working with the students is always refreshing and we hope to do it at more schools in the future.
I am also in the process of booking a West Coast tour in July. Vita is off to Spain on August 10th, so we're trying to cram as much as possible in before he leaves. We have open dates around the Seattle/Portland Area for any last-minute shows, house concerts, etc. (just e-mail us if you'd like us to bring our music to your neighborhood)
and we put some new soundclips on the music page. These are samples from our live show, including our new "Heavy Metal" set.
